Background – I retired from the USMC in 2002, went to law school, graduated summa cum laude at 45 years old and immediately started work as a business consultant. I worked with Fortune 500 companies as a leadership coach and process improvement specialist. At 52 years old, I was tired of the travel and retired from that, too. Too young to stop working but too broken for physical stuff, I started writing that book I always wanted to write. I haven’t stopped since. I have over six million words published. What’s that have to do with your company?
As part of realizing some success as an author, I saw a lot of others struggling to help themselves. My friend Michael Anderle started the 20Booksto50k® group and within a year, I started running it for him. We’ve grown tenfold, to well over 50,000 members. We started holding conferences, too, and they quickly became the best in the world, the industry standard that anyone who is anyone had to come to. We grew from 170 to 1000 to 2000 and we continue to grow.
Again, what does that have to do with you? Building a brand and momentum isn’t magic. I took the principles and strategies that I used as a business consultant, along with my Marine Corps drive, to help people to help themselves. Is your front line disconnected from the business bottom line? They shouldn’t be. They are an integral part of the whole. Helping them to feel that and embrace that is what makes great companies great. People will keep their jobs for what they’re paid, but they won’t give you the best they have unless they believe.
